In Economics, Health, International Manifesto Group

In this presentation to the International Manifesto Group, Maria Madi aims to discuss the health and economic risks posed by the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. In 2020, the pandemic found Brazil with a poor economic recovery and little room for fiscal policy following the recession of 2015/16. The far-right president, who repeatedly denied the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, has recently admitted that the country is bankrupt and that he is unable to offer solutions. In a context where vaccine hesitancy has gained substantial ground, the confusion around the start and schedule of the vaccination program has increased deep concerns about the health and economic perspectives. In this scenario, investment flights, raising dollar appreciation, fiscal imbalances, growing poverty and unemployment are already indicators of the current economic challenge.
